  • Kye and Kiki in the story are phytoplankton.
  • Phytoplankton is a type of marine microalgae, which is similar to plants found on land.
  • They make their energy from the sun. 
  • There are thousands of different types of phytoplankton.
  • Phytoplankton make more than half the oxygen on Earth.

  • Corals are actually animals not plants or rocks!
  • The animal that makes the coral structure is called a polyp.
  • A polyp is related to anemones and jellyfish 
  • They help to protect coastlines from storms and waves.
  • Coral reefs provide a home for many different animals.

Fun Facts:

  • Sea urchins live in all 5 oceans. 
  • There are about 950 different species of sea urchins. 
  • They belong to a group of animals called echinoderms that are all covered in spiky skin. 
  • They do not have a bone in their body! 
  • The name urchin translates in many countries into hedgehog, so they are sea hedgehogs!

  • Blue starfish
  •  can grow up to 40cm in diameter. 
  • They have 5 cylinder shaped arms unlike most starfish who's are are pointed. 
  • They defend themselves against predators by producing a chemical compound called saponins, this is not dangerous to humans. 
  • They are only found in the Indo-pacific oceans.

  • The blacktip reef shark prefers shallow coral reef waters. 
  • They get their name from the back on their fins. 
  • They grow to an average size of 1.7m
  • They are social animals 
  • They can give birth to up to 10 pups a year

5 Fun facts: 

  • There are about 90 different species of parrotfish that are found in warm tropical waters all over the world.
  • They have 2 sets of teeth, one which is like a beak and the other in its throat to grind up its food. 
  • Some parrotfish make a bubble of mucus to sleep in at night. 
  • Parrotfish poop sand. This is undigested bits of coral and rock. 
  • Parrotfish can change genders.
